Abstract
Geomechanics has evolved significantly over the last 5000 years. I will describe some of the notable achievements in this time, and in particular will focus on the excellent advances made in Australia in the last 20 years or so. I will then speculate wildly about the future of geomechanics. Audience participation is requested at several points during this presentation.
